Abstract:
The rapid change in computational capabilities has made Big Data a major modern statistical challenge. Less well understood is the rise of Complex Data as a perhaps greater challenge. Object Oriented Data Analysis (OODA) is a framework for addressing this, in particular providing a general approach to the definition, representation, visualization and analysis of Complex Data. The notion of OODA generally guides data analysis, through providing a useful terminology for interdisciplinary discussion of the many choices typically needed in modern complex data analyses. The main ideas are illustrated through several OODA contexts, including shapes, trees (in the sense of graph theory), covariance matrices and nonnegative curves as data objects.
About the Speaker:
Dr. James Stephen Marron is the Amos Hawley Distinguished Professor in UNC's Department of Statistics and Operations Research as well as a professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
Dr. Marron is widely recognized as a world research leader in the statistical disciplines of high dimensional, functional and object oriented data analysis, as well as data visualization. He has made broad major contributions ranging from the invention of innovative new statistical methods, through software development and on to statistical and mathematical theory.
His research continues with a number of ongoing deep, interdisciplinary research collaborations with colleagues in Computer Science, Genetics, Medicine, Mathematics and Biology. A special strength is his strong record of mentoring graduate students, postdocs and junior faculty, in both statistics and also related disciplinary fields.
Dr. Marron has received numerous prestigious honors in recognition of his contributions to statistics and mathematics. He is a Fellow of both the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association, and an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. His influence is reflected in his ranking as #15 on the ISI list of the world’s most highly cited mathematicians (1991–2001).
He holds the title of Amos Hawley Distinguished Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, and has been invited to deliver several distinguished lectures, including the S. N. Roy Memorial Lecture at the University of Calcutta, the Ralph Bradley Lecture at the University of Georgia, and the Saw Swee Hock Distinguished Visiting Professorship at the National University of Singapore (2015).
