Abstract:
Weak solutions to partial differential equations are sought in Sobolev spaces. But Sobolev functions can be arbitrary on sets of measure $0$. Thus, how a solution is defined point-wise is an issue. In 1995, one and half year before his death, De Diorgi proposed some open problems concerning continuity of weak solutions to a class of degenerate and/or singular elliptic equations. In this talk we will discuss these problems and some recent progress. Anyone with some background in real analysis should be able to follow the talk.
