Baby Julia and baby Mandelbrot Sets for Generalized McMullen maps

Physical Location

Allen 14

Abstract:

We will begin with the background on discrete complex dynamical systems, explaining just how is it that the intricate Mandelbrot and Julia sets are formed for the family of complex quadratic polynomials z -> z^2+c. Then, we will explore the mathematics behind the surprising appearance of tiny copies of the Mandelbrot and Julia sets in other families of maps, notably here the "generalized McMullen maps'', z -> z^n + a/(z^n) + b.  The talk is accessible to a general mathematical audience, and there will be plenty of colorful pictures!
