Our friend the eigenvalue

For a linear operator T on a finite dimensional vector space X (over C to avoid perversity), the spectrum of T consists of its eigenvalues.  We will investigate the eigenvalues and spectrum of an important and very natural operator on an infinite dimensional vector space.  Given our fifty -minute time constraint, this will be a “toy” model of mathematical research.  Nonetheless, our results will have intinsic interest and we can highlight certain themes common in more serious investigations.
