Title:  Actuarial Science 101
Abstract:  The actuarial profession is often cited as a popular career choice for applying math and statistics to the business world. This presentation will serve as an introduction to the actuarial profession, including a typical day in the life of an actuary and an overview of what it takes to become an actuary. Outline:

  1. What is an actuary?
  2. How actuaries impact your life
  3. A typical day in the life of an actuary
  4. Applications of math and statistics to real-world problems
  5. How to become an actuary

Bio: Doug Lamm is currently an Associate Actuary at Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and holds credentials as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA). Before joining Southern Farm Bureau, Doug worked with the Retirement practice of Aon-Hewitt in Atlanta, GA. His current role focuses on asset-liability modeling for Asset Adequacy Analysis and Risk-Based Capital reporting.
